With coffee you might fit in to one of two categories. You’ll either be a novice, who up until now has drunk instant coffee and is now perhaps just starting to experiment with ‘real’ coffee, ground or beans, and isn’t quite sure what you like yet. The second is the experienced coffee lover who’s been drinking fresh coffee for years and is now starting to get a little stuck in his ways perhaps, always sticking to his/her favourite. There’s nothing wrong with this, we all have our favourites, but it’s good to experiment with coffee and enjoy spending time trying out new flavours. If you’re the novice, then perhaps you’re unsure where to start and although it can be an exciting journey trying out new coffee, if you don’t know where to begin, you may just feel it’s easier to stick with instant.
The coffee journey can be a fascinating trip into experimenting with intrinsic flavours
Firstly, before you embark on coffee drinking it’s a good thing to know where your coffee originated. Traceability means you can see where it’s come from, where it grew, and whether fair trade practices have been implemented. This means the people who farm the coffee get paid fairly for what they do, have good living conditions, and the coffee is free from over processing and bad storage. And this is good news for you because the coffee will always taste better. Rather than drinking a mixed blend of coffees in a jar that produce an instant tasteless cup of coffee, you get a really good quality cup, strong on flavour and taste.
Fair trade equals better coffee
Fair trade practices produce better coffee, because believe it or not, coffee is good for you, it’s full of antioxidants and has a high nutritional value, but of course this is dependent on the quality of the soil, and whether or not it’s mineral rich. This way, your coffee comes full of B vitamins, Potassium and Manganese, you can also drink more without the jitteriness of regular, instant cheap coffee, which can leave you feeling anxious and on edge.
Coffee is about more than the caffeine
Smell it, take in the aroma, what does it remind you of? You’ll be a fan of a milder coffee or perhaps you like something in-between (medium), or perhaps you’re a bold drinker and you’d prefer something a little stronger. Don’t drink coffee purely for the caffeine, because that’s the worst reason of all to drink it. It should be appreciated and savoured in the same way as you would a glass of wine.
Shop around, and try different ones until you find the right one
So, how do you choose the right coffee? By trying new coffees on a regular basis, discussing it with others like yourself who enjoy a good coffee, revisit old favourites and make comparisons with what you’ve tried recently. Drink it plain and savour it. You’ll find the right coffee for you over time and when you do, don’t always stick to that, don’t get into a coffee rut, and see if you can find more than one that’s right for you.
