Different Types of Coffee Beans from Around the World

You must have wondered just how many different types of coffee beans are available worldwide and what sets each variety apart. There are four basic types of coffee beans. These are Excelsa, Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica.
This type of coffee bean is the most popular one there is, and it makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee. Originating in the highlands of Ethiopia centuries ago, the name comes from the area these beans became popular in the 7th century – Arabia, present-day Yemen.
Arabica beans are much harder to grow compared to the other types, and this is what makes them a bit expensive too. All sorts of coffee beans are grown in over 50 countries, but Arabica requires more shade, water, and a high altitude of at least 2,000 feet to grow. This is the best quality of coffee beans because of their distinct taste and smooth flavour.
Arabica beans offer different flavour notes depending on where the beans are grown. Arabica grown in Indonesia has earthy notes, while the beans grown in Ethiopia have a floral blend.
Robusta Coffee Beans
This type of roasted coffee bean is the second most popular variety there is. Originating in sub-Saharan Africa, Robusta beans can now be found in the coffee fields of Indonesia and Africa. This variety is less expensive compared to Arabica, making it a great pick for people on a budget.
These beans are much bigger and round in shape, with their plant growing up to 15 to 20 feet. However, these beans fail to grow in hot temperatures even though they can be grown in lower altitudes.
Robusta coffee beans have a strong aroma, and they have a more bitter taste. These beans also contain more caffeine compared to Arabica.
Liberica Coffee Beans
The name comes from Liberia, where this bean originated from. This type of bean has a smokey and bold flavour profile which is usually mixed with other types of beans to give it more complexity. The plant of Liberica grows much taller than that of Arabica and Robusta. The plant can tolerate hot and humid climates and doesn’t require a high altitude for it to grow properly.
This coffee bean makes up 2% of the global coffee supply, and it’s mainly grown in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Liberica has polarizing views among coffee consumers. While some enjoy the nutty, unusual flavour others think it tastes like burnt garbage.
Excelsa Coffee Beans
This variety of coffee bean is found in Southeast Asia and take up a similar shape as Liberica beans. The plant for Excelsa coffee beans grows up to be 20 to 30 feet tall at a medium altitude. The taste of Excelsa is unique as it combines flavours of light and dark roasts. The caffeine contents and aroma are lighter, and Excelsa is usually blended with other coffee beans for a more complex flavour profile.
